Walk On! Club

The Walk On! Club is intended for any student or staff member to accumulate as many miles as possible in a pre-determined timeframe. A walking route can be laid out and measured on school grounds. During specific times during the school day, or during extracurricular time before or after-school, participants can log steps using pedometers and enter their results on Walk On! tracking charts (downloads are available to the left in Download These Resources)

  • The course should be designed so that students can easily attain (and celebrate) interval milestones.
  • Your map could be posted in the classroom or a public viewing area such as the multi-purpose room or cafeteria, so students can collectively see the progress as an individual classroom, grade level, etc.
  • Depending on the geographic location of the school site, creative excursions, with school and parental approval, could be taken during the month. Examples of this are: walking field trips, visits to state parks or national parks, community service projects including a walking component, etc.
  • Incentives to stimulate student interest and participation include: extra credit points in class, points toward purchases at a school store, movie tickets, coupons at local businesses, T-shirts or other prizes donated from the school or community. Something as simple as spray painting the teacher's old tennis shoe gold and presenting it to the student or classroom with the highest number of miles could be incentive enough.
  • If your class is especially competitive, or needs a little extra push, divide them into teams of 5-6 students. Have the teams work together and add their mileage in a race across the state.

Note: For a fun variation, name your club after your school's mascot instead. For example, The Patriots Club or The Cougars Club. Or, invite students to brainstorm names and then hold a classroom vote
