2008 Challenge Results

In preparation for the 2008 Challenge, 40,000 tool kits were distributed to fifth-grade students across the state. During February, nearly 11,000 students completed the month-long fitness challenge, walking a combined total of 1.7 million miles - equal to 68 trips around the Earth.

Walk On! Teachers Talk Back

Nancy Pina-Gray, Phoenix
Determining stride length and discovering the best way to "wear" the pedometers fostered collaboration as well as interest. We were able to incorporate the information while graphing and studying the human body. The logs helped to maintain interest and focus. The students then worked together for totals. Teacher and aide participation/discussion further encouraged individual participation. We all were fascinated by the differences recorded with various activities and determining the reasons. Thank you.

I just wanted to thank the Walk On! program for providing these pedometers. What a cool idea to offer iPods to encourage physical activity from these older kids. More and more, I see older children in our community playing video games instead of riding bikes, watching TV or playing on the computer instead of participating in sports, and choosing to eat a bag of chips and a soda for lunch instead of a balanced meal.

Great job on thinking of a simple way to get these kids moving!

We have started our program. We're off and walking! In addition to your poster, we are tracking our steps and miles on a daily basis and plotting these out on a line plot; figuring mean, median, and mode each day; discussing range, gaps, outliers, etc. A real lesson in data gathering as well as a healthy program! Great job, thanks, Isabel

The district has highly encouraged we participate in this program. We were pleased to tell them we already were planning on it.”
